God is More Willing to Pardon than to Punish

Are we under the guilt of sin? There is a promise, ” The Lord merciful and gracious ” (Exod. xxiv. 6), where God as it were puts on His glorious embroidery, and holds out the golden scepter, to encourage poor trembling sinners to come to Him. ” The Lord, merciful. ” God is more willing to pardon than to punish. Mercy does more multiply in Him than sin in us. Mercy is His nature… He shows mercy, not because we deserve mercy, but because He delights in mercy. “All Things for Good

Shall I Sin Against Goodness

The goodness of God works for good to the godly. God’s goodness is a means to make us good. ” The goodness of God leadeth to repentance ” (Rom. ii. 4). The goodness of God is a spiritual sunbeam to melt the heart into tears. Oh, says the soul, has God been so good to me? Has He reprieved me so long from hell, and shall I grieve His Spirit any more? Shall I sin against goodness? The goodness of God works for good, as it ushers in all blessings. The favours we receive, are the silver streams which flow from the fountain of God’s goodness. “All Things for Good

Heavenly Streams of Joy

The streams of glory are not like the water of a conduit, often stopped, so that we cannot have one drop of water; but those heavenly streams of joy are continually running. Oh how should we despise this valley of tears where we now are, for the mount of transfiguration! How should we long for the full enjoyment of God in Paradise! Had we a sight of that land of promise, we should need patience to be content to live here any longer. “A Body of Divinity” pg. 25

God did not Choose Us because We were Worthy

Let us then ascribe the whole work of grace to the pleasure of God’s Will. God did not choose us because we were worthy, but by choosing us He makes us worthy. “A Puritan Golden Treasury

Mercy Sweetens All God’s Other Attributes

Mercy sweetens all God’s other attributes. God’s holiness without mercy, and his justice without mercy were terrible. When the water was bitter, and Israel could not drink, Moses cast a tree into the waters, and then they were made sweet. How bitter and dreadful were the other attributes of God, did not mercy sweeten them! Mercy sets God’s power on work to help us; it makes his justice become our friend; it shall avenge our quarrels. God’s mercy is one of the most orient pearls of his crown; it makes his Godhead appear amiable and lovely. When Moses said to God, ‘I beseech thee shew me thy glory;’ the Lord answered him, ‘I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will shew thee mercy.’ Exod 33: I9. God’s mercy is his glory. His holiness makes him illustrious; his mercy makes him propitious. ~ “A Body of Divinity

The Elect, by Nature, are as Wicked as Others

Christians, you who are vessels of election – were by nature as wicked as others – but God had compassion on you and plucked you as brands out of the fire! He stopped you in your course of sinning – when you were marching to hell! He turned you back to Him by sincere repentance. Oh, here is the banner of love displayed over you! ~ The Mischief of Sin

Mercy is a Magnet or a Millstone

If mercy is not a magnet to draw us nearer to God, it will be a millstone to sink us deeper to hell. Nothing so cold as lead, yet nothing more scalding when it is melted. Nothing so sweet as mercy, yet nothing so terrible when it is abused. Sinners never escape when mercy draws up the indictment. “Mischief of Sin” pg. 67

What Mercy is Like

Mercy is not like the sun to the fire, to dull it, but like the oil to the wheel, to make it run faster. “The Godly Man’s Picture” pg. 133

A Gracious Heart Produces Obedience

A gracious heart is like a piece of good ground that, having received the seed of mercy, produces a crop of obedience. “The Godly Man’s Picture” pg. 133

Nothing is Sweeter than Mercy

Nothing is sweeter than mercy, when it is improved; nothing fiercer, when it is abused; as nothing is colder than lead when taken out of the mine, and nothing more scalding when it is heated. Nothing is blunter than iron, yet nothing is sharper when it is whetted. “The mercy of the Lord is upon them that fear Him” (Psa. 103:17). Mercy is not for them that sin and fear not, but for them that fear and sin not. God’s mercy is a holy mercy; where it pardons it heals. “A Body of Divinity” pg. 97
